Description: Another member of the MedStar System, Harbor Hospital Center started when Dr. Harry Peterman founded the South Baltimore Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in the industrial area of South Baltimore in 1901. Two years later, a growing population serving the industrial area, especially Bethlehem Steel shipyard, turned his clinic into a hospital that by 1918 had “an accident room” for sudden injuries, many resulting from workplace accidents. Fifty years later, in 1968, South Baltimore General Hospital moved from its home on Light Street to South Hanover Street, looking over the Patapsco River, where it continues today. Now called Harbor Hospital, the 222-bed teaching hospital offers about 30 specialties, which are provided by more than 1,500 employees, many of whom are affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Their primary centers of excellence are cancer care, orthopedic specialty care, women’s care, and community education and family wellness. The facility offers numerous free classes and support groups to help people understand such medical concerns as joint replacement, yoga, or dinner with the doctor discussing coping with a hernia. The classes are held at the waterfront campus and in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard Counties
