Description: Part of the University of Maryland Medical System, the 152-bed hospital began more than a century ago as a home for children with orthopedic deficits. The hospital has evolved into a site for innovative orthopedic and rehabilitation services for children and adults. Located on the border of Baltimore City and Baltimore County on a 90-acre wooded site, where founder James Kernan’s original Victorian mansion still stands, the hospital, employing about 500 people, treats patients suffering from a variety of orthopedic and neurological conditions, including spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation and sports medicine. The pediatric orthopedics department focuses on the wide variety of growing children’s problems, such as scoliosis and club feet. It is the largest inpatient rehabilitation hospital and provider of rehabilitation services in Maryland.
