Description: Founded in 1881 by a group of Baltimore doctors as a university-affiliated teaching hospital, the Baltimore Medical College, as it was called back then, became Maryland General after becoming affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In 1965 it again merged, this time with the Baltimore Eye and Ear Hospital to become the premier teaching hospital for eye, ear, nose, and throat problems. Now, the 243-bed hospital, with more than 500 doctors and 30 different specialties, provides those services, and rehabilitation, transitional care, mental health, and obstetrics and gynecological services. In 1997 the hospital opened its Obstetrical Center, which allows each mother to remain in her one, well-furnished, home-like room throughout the entire childbirthing process. The hospital’s rehabilitation facility provides subacute services, and has a unique brain injury program.
