Description: The 285-bed hospital started as a 20-bed clinic for the poor and indigent of Baltimore. It was run by one doctor and a couple of medical students in an abandoned schoolhouse in 1867. At that time, the hospital was part of Washington University School of Medicine. In 1874 City Hospital, named for the nearby City Springs, a public fountain and park, was taken over by six Sisters of Mercy, who continued to care for the city’s poor, while opening the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1899. Since that time, the hospital has continued to grow into one of the area’s larger hospitals, employing 2,033 people and having an operating budget of about $147 million. The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine is headed by world-class gynecologic oncologist Dr. Neil Rosenshein, and breast cancer surgeon Dr. Neil B. Freidman heads the Hoffberger Breast Center. The newest additions are institutes for surgical oncology and foot and ankle reconstruction. In recent years the hospital has been making arrangements with a number of area businesses and government agencies to provide first-line health care to injured workers, giving it a new niche to fill in the Downtown area. The hospital provides care in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, urology, cardiology, oncology, cosmetic surgery, hospice, transitional care, and emergency medicine. The Cardinal Shehan Center/Stella Maris geriatric care facility and Mercy Ridge retirement community, both in Timonium, are Mercy affiliates.
