Description: For years the Babe Ruth Birthplace had way too much stuff. Contrarily, the old train station by Camden Yards was gorgeous space and nothing filled it. Voila! The Babe Ruth Birthplace and the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards are separate sports exhibitions but equal, or something like that. Although the Sultan of Swat made his name as a New York Yankee (hiss!), Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore on February 6, 1895. A museum now resides in the house (and two adjacent houses) where Ruth was born at 216 Emory St. The house almost came under the wrecking ball in 1968 until the mayor and the Greater Baltimore Council rallied to save the historic site. Artifacts and photographs tell the story of a phenomenal life. Although much smaller than the behemoth in Cooperstown, this is a much more interesting museum about baseball and the Babe. The museum celebrates Ruth’s birthday each year on February 6 with free admission from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a champagne toast and cake. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., November through March, and daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October, with hours extended when the Orioles have a home game. Museum members have free admission. Otherwise, admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 (3-12) for children age 3 to 12, and free for those younger than age 3. A combo ticket with the Sports Legends Museum is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children.
