Description: The nonprofit Portland Stage Company (PSC) was founded in 1974 and is northern New England’s largest professional member of the League of Resident Theaters, a national trade organization. Portland Stage presents a wide range of plays year-round, many featuring talent from New York City, Boston, and other large cities. PSC’s home stage at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts on Forest Avenue has hosted both world-premiere works and theater classics, including works by Tennessee Williams, William Shakespeare, and Molière. PSC also produces two festivals: the Little Festival of the Unexpected, which showcases new plays and young writers; and From Away, in which international writers come to Portland to present their work and share ideas. PSC’s annual performance of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol has become a favorite holiday event in Portland. Every year PSC recruits the best local and from-away talent to give new life to this timeless story. PSC also frequently presents lectures and discussions with actors, directors, and writers before or after the performance about the methods behind theatrical production.
