Description: The Modern, a vintage restaurant with a dinerlike vibe, serves pot roast with carrots, pork sandwiches on apple bread, omelets, and giant malts and milk shakes. If you have a hankering for grilled cheese, have one here: they’re made with Asiago cheese, Dijon mustard, and caramelized onions to create the yummiest variation on this old standby you’ll probably ever need (there may be better ones out there, but when they’re this good, why bother?). To mix it up a bit, the cafe also makes walleye egg rolls, penne with goat cheese and crimini mushrooms, tomato risotto with capers and lemon zest, and heavenly chocolate crème brûlée. The Modern serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday, and adds breakfast Saturday and Sunday. (Tip for the cash-conscious: Last night’s pot roast, just as delicious the next morning, can be had at a bargain price as part of a breakfast hash.) Closed Monday.
