Description: John Burroughs is a coeducational, college-preparatory school that offers a liberal-arts education for students in grades 7 through 12. Founded in 1923, the school strives to balance academics, the arts, and athletics with community service and environmental awareness. The 40-acre campus includes seven student-use buildings, and the school has as an outdoor facility located in the Missouri Ozarks that is used for education and community building. Burroughs offers small classes to enhance the students’ ability to learn, and the school stresses ethics, diversity, student government, outdoor education, and other activities to supplement its curriculum. There’s an on-site academic support program that is available to assist students with writing, math, and study skills. Admission is based on school records, recommendations, an entrance examination, and an interview, and the applicant’s personal qualities are a major consideration.

Description: This fashionable shop specializes in stylish boys and girls fashions from Europe and various East and West Coast designers. In addition to dresses, pants, skirts, jeans, coats, and swimsuits in sizes newborn to 14, Jillybean features an assortment of baby gifts, diaper bags, infant bedding and clothing, hair accessories, shoes, and more. Closed Sunday.

Description: Roberts Boys Shops (although there is only one location) is a family-owned clothing store that has been in St. Louis since 1947. The upscale shop features pricey—but very good quality—dress shirts, ties, jackets, pants, and footwear, along with casual clothing such as jeans, sweaters, and polo-style shirts. They carry slim, regular, and husky sizes 4–24, and feature prominent designers like Europa, Tommy Hilfiger, Mezzanote, Calvin, Perry Ellis, Nicole Miller, and Nautica. Alterations are free, and the staff makes sure that the young gentlemen leave their shop with properly fitted attire that will last—at least until they grow out of it. Open Monday through Saturday year-round and Sundays, September through April.
