Description: A growing force on the Charlotte media scene, Carolina Weekly Newspapers started in 2002 by publishing a free, tabloid-sized paper called South Charlotte Weekly, which evolved into the Charlotte Weekly. As that community-focused paper grew, the company launched free weeklies in other parts of the city, and also purchased existing weeklies like the Huntersville Herald and the Mountain Island Monitor.Today, Carolina Weekly is a conglomerate of six papers serving South Charlotte, Huntersville/Lake Norman, Union County, Matthews-Mint Hill, Mountain Island, and University City. The company is led by two managing editors: Regan White, a feisty Yale graduate in her late 20s known for her weekly column, “Regan’s Rant,” and Frank DeLoache, a respected industry veteran who’s held upper-level positions at the Charlotte Observer and Salisbury Post. DeLoache oversees the three northern publications, while White handles the three southern publications. In general, the papers provide local news and features, with sections on schools, restaurants, faith, arts and entertainment, sports, community announcements, event listings, and classifieds. Free at area racks.
