Description: Duke University Hospital is the flagship hospital for the Duke University Health System, where the efforts of Duke University’s medical and nursing schools as well as its research and teaching expertise combine. Duke University Hospital has about 950 beds and is served by hundreds of physicians who work under the umbrella of Duke University Health System, one of the highest ranked academic hospitals in the country. At Duke Hospital, patients are availed of the wide range of medical specialties taught and researched at Duke University Medical School and the affiliate hospitals and clinics. Among the specialties at which Duke University Hospital excels are cancer treatment, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, psychiatry, respiratory disease, and urology. Duke has been a leader in medical research since its inception in the 1920s after a $4 million gift from James Buchanan Duke endowed the hospital, nursing school, and medical school. Today, Duke University Health System employees number more than 14,000. Close to 900 physicians work as residents and fellows, and there are more than 1,500 faculty members.
