Description: Like many progressive urban areas, Raleigh is awash in backyard chicken keepers. This tour of stylish and creative residential henhouses is one of the city’s newer traditions, but a very popular and growing one that draws hundreds each year. Participants traipse through strangers’ yards in the same way that flower lovers take a garden tour, but it’s the Araucanas and Sebrights and their coops they’ve come to see. Henhouses range from innovative structures created with salvaged materials to miniature versions of their human keepers’ homes painted to match. Attendees include fellow chicken keepers seeking inspiration for their own flocks’ digs as well as aspiring poultry collectors and the simply curious. Tickets go on sale the day of the tour at a number of businesses around the city. Admission is a non-perishable food item or cash donation to Urban Ministries of Wake County.
