It is part of UNC Health Care, the state-owned non-profit health care system affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine. Founded in 1894, it opened in the former home of Governor Charles Manly after a Raleigh tanner named John Rex left money and instructions for its establishment in his will. Today Rex has 665 beds and more than 950 doctors and an emergency room. On the main Rex campus, services include heart care, surgery, oncology, orthopedic and spine care, and a birthing center. The hospital is also home to a wound healing center, a rehabilitation and nursing care center, a sleep disorders center, a women’s services center, and a cancer center. Rex operates more than 20 satellite clinics and centers in Wake County, including wellness centers, cancer centers, and express care clinics.
