Description: For 6 months in 1777–78, George Washington’s Continental Army braved brutal weather conditions and meager supplies to continue their fight for American freedom. You can still visit George Washington’s headquarters here and see a fascinating film on how the soldiers survived. When you visit the park today, the hardships of that historic winter seem far way. Year-round beautiful Valley Forge National Park is one of the Philadelphia area’s most-visited outdoor places for education and recreation. You can hike, bike, or horseback ride along 28 acres of trails. Bike rentals are available at the Welcome Center. Visitors can also rent a hybrid bike and explore the park on their own. Bike rentals are available from the lower Welcome Center (610-783-4593; valleyforgebikes.com) from June through Labor Day for $10 per hour, $20 per day. Audio tour CDs and maps are available at the Welcome Center. Or you can take an audio tour via your own cell phone by calling (484) 396-1018 for English, (484) 396-1015 for Spanish. The tour is free, but you will have to use your own cell phone and minutes. Every day during the summer and on spring and fall weekends, guided tours are available, including free ranger-led walking excursions and fee-based 90-minute trolley tours (610-783-1074). Also, check the online schedule for Saturday “Join the Continental Army” events during which kids ages 6 to 12 will be enlisted into service, learn to stand and march like a soldier, and carry, “load, and fire” a wooden musket. Specific activities vary per event.
