Description: George Washington and John Adams were busy guys when they were in Philadelphia. But both found the time to attend services at Christ Church. Benjamin Franklin and his wife, Deborah, were regular parishioners as was Betsy Ross. Founded in 1695, this parish was the first of the Church of England (Anglican) in Pennsylvania and the birthplace of the American Episcopal Church. The current building was constructed in 1744. Visitors are welcome to visit the church any day and worship with the congregation on Sunday. In the adjacent 2-acre burial ground lie Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence along with other dignitaries and church members from colonial to modern times. The church is open year-round, the burial ground Mar through Dec. Guided tours of both are offered. Suggested donations for visits are $2 for adults, $1 for students.
