Description: After more than 5 years of fundraising and planning, the new 10,500-square-foot Lowcountry Senior Center opened in the spring of 2002. The concept behind the center was to build a place for active seniors who want more out of life than “sitting in front of the tube all day.” The center, managed by Roper St. Francis Healthcare, serves adults age 50 and older with a wide variety of programs and coordinated activities focused on wellness, education, fitness, recreation, and volunteer services. It also serves as a resource for senior-oriented information and houses a computer lab, fitness and arts and crafts rooms, and a main room for social activities like dancing, movies, and wine tastings. The Lowcountry Senior Center is located near the entrance to the James Island County Park on Riverland Drive and offers ample free parking. One-year memberships are $50 for Charleston County residents and $60 for nonresidents. Gold memberships including use of the fitness room are $85 for county residents and $95 for nonresidents.
