Description: South Carolina resident seniors 60 or older who are eager for an intellectual challenge can take any of the wide array of courses offered (on a space-available basis) at these two outstanding Charleston colleges. The cost is just $25 a semester at the College of Charleston and only a $15 registration fee plus a one-time application fee of $30 at The Citadel. Another academic resource is the Senior Scholars Program for ages 55 plus, sponsored by The Citadel. For a $35-per-term fee, non-degree-seeking seniors become members and select lectures presented by Citadel faculty and staff and community leaders. Members are issued student ID cards allowing use of parking facilities, Daniel Library, computer labs, recreational facilities, and the college bookstore. Fall, spring, and summer term programs have covered such topics as “Fort Moultrie,” “The History-Shaping Women of Charleston,” “Maritime Piloting in South Carolina,” and “Energy Efficiency at Home.” Social activities are offered as well. These include lectures, tours, picnics, and dancing classes. Anyone who is retired or semi-retired can enroll by calling (843) 953-5089.
