Description: In 1825, Charles Edmondston, another wealthy merchant and wharf owner, built this handsome dwelling where he could enjoy an uninterrupted view over the expanse of Charleston Harbor. In 1828 the house was bought by Col. William Alston, a rice planter. His son, Charles, redecorated the house in the 1830s, favoring the fashionable Greek Revival style. Incredibly, today’s visitor can still find many family documents, portraits, silver pieces, and fine furnishings—including Charles Alston’s almost-intact library—in place. Much of it dates back to the 1830s. The house is notable for its unusual Regency woodwork, as well as its uncompromising views of the harbor. The intimacy and authentic details of the house may leave guests feeling as if the Alstons only recently left the property, perhaps on a visit to the country. The Edmondston-Alston House is owned by Middleton Place Foundation. Tours are offered from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tues through Sat and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sun and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Mon. Admission is charged, but it’s free for children age 7 and younger.
