Description: This charming bed-and-breakfast inn has not only won the hearts of its regulars; it has earned a spot on the National Trust of Historic Preservation because of its historical significance. Records of the house date from 1734 when Elisha Screven first laid plans for her dream home on town lot 53 in Georgetown. The home changed ownership several times, the last surviving chronicle showing that Susannah Gignilliat lived there and filed a claim in 1776 for reimbursement for supplies given to American troops during the American Revolution. The inn is named after Susannah’s mother, Mary Magdalen DuPre. Unfortunately, all other documents of ownership for the next 60 years were destroyed by Sherman’s Advance during the Civil War.DuPre House has been extensively altered over the course of the 20th century, but its second-floor wall overhang on the northwestern facade remains a rare example of an old building technique, uncommon to the southeastern states. Each of DuPre’s five rooms boast queen-size poster beds and private baths. Three of the suites include fireplaces. A full breakfast is served every morning to guests and includes a private roast coffee, blended especially for the DuPre House. Afternoon and evening refreshments are also served. Without leaving the grounds of the inn, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool or bubble away in the hot tub.In July 2003 the property was purchased by Sam Murphy, formerly of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and Karen Komar, a retired U.S. Army officer. Both are committed to preserving the inn and its history for future generations to love and admire.DuPre House accepts bookings for receptions, small meetings, and family gatherings. Business travelers are accepted. Smoking is allowed outside only.
