Description: The chamber of commerce staffs a welcome center at this site just past mile marker 1 on William Hilton Parkway. Stop here and you’ll find displays and brochures involving shopping, dining, lodging, long- and short-term rentals, golf, tennis, fishing, real estate, tours, and events. There’s a video display that will introduce you to the island in several different languages (you make the choice) and a large-scale map of the island, plus smaller maps of Hilton Head and the surrounding areas that you can take with you. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. The welcome center shares a building with the Coastal Discovery Museum, which offers exhibits involving the area’s history, native crafts, and wildlife. Admission is $2. There’s also an art gallery exhibit room. Museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon through Sat and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sun, and there’s a museum shop featuring books on the Civil War and topics of local interest.
