Insider Pick:

Description: One of the most atmospheric barbecue restaurants in the area, the Salt Lick occupies a rural site about 12 miles south of US 290 West on RR 1826, known as Camp Ben McCullough Road. Set in a Hill Country pasture, the Salt Lick has garnered a worldwide reputation, thanks to its mail-order food shipments, corporate parties by some of Austin’s top employers, and coverage in national and international publications. There are picnic tables inside and out, and the place is always busy. In winter a large fireplace inside warms diners. The menu includes brisket, chicken, ribs, sausage, homemade pickles, and peach and berry cobblers. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Reservations are suggested for large groups. The Salt Lick is located in a dry area of Hays County, so no beer, wine, or liquor is served; however, patrons can bring their own alcoholic beverages. No credit cards. There is an ATM machine on site, but watch out for those fees. Get a last minute taste of Salt Lick to go at the Austin airport.
