Insider Pick:

Description: From the outside, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft might not look that impressive. But step inside, and you’ll find some of Houston’s most intriguing exhibits, each demonstrating that the making and design of crafts is an intensive process, one with a long and constantly evolving history. Many of the exhibits here showcase objects made from fiber, metal, clay, glass, and wood, and many feature crafters hail from Texas. In fact, you can see many of the featured artists at work in their studios at the center, which provides workspace through its artist-in-residence program. Be sure to visit the center’s gift shop—the Asher Retail Gallery. Worthy of an exhibit itself, the Asher Retail Gallery sells meticulously crafted pieces in a variety of media from established and emerging crafters from around the world. Admission is free, and free parking is available on the street and in a wheelchair-accessible lot behind the museum on Travis Street. Closed Monday.
