Description: Lawndale Art Center is the only museum dedicated to showcasing the work of Houston artists. The center, located in an art deco–style building just a block from the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, houses four galleries, which offer a combined 20-plus exhibits each year. Informal talks with the curators and artists accompany many of these exhibits. The center also hosts several special events, the biggest of which is Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November. To commemorate those who have died, the center offers sugar skull decoration and papier-mâché skeleton workshops, a silent auction, and classical music and dance performances. Another big draw is the annual 20th Century Modern Market in April. Art dealers from around the country sell ceramics, glass, metal, textiles, furniture, clothes, and other high-quality designs produced during the 20th century. Admission is always free, but there’s a charge for admission to Modern Market events. Parking is available on the street and in the center parking lot. Closed Sun.
