Description: During Johnson’s life, the ranch was closed to all but official visitors. In hopes of catching a glimpse of the president, travelers often stopped along RR 1, located across the river from the “Texas White House,” the nickname for the Johnsons’ home. Today the park draws visitors from around the world who come for a look at the history behind the Hill Country, the presidency of LBJ, and a working Texas ranch.A visitor center presents displays on LBJ’s life; nearby, historic cabins offer a look back at early Texas living. Guided tours (a fee is charged for these) of the LBJ Ranch, operated by the National Park Service, stop at the 1-room Junction School where Johnson began his education, slow down for a photo of the Texas White House, then continue past the president’s airstrip and cattle barns. Other stops include a look at the reconstructed birthplace home as well as the family cemetery where the former president is buried. The Sauer-Beckmann Living Historical Farm, two 1918 farm homes, are furnished in period style and staffed by costumed interpreters who garden, tend livestock, and perform chores. Children enjoy petting the farm animals. Although the park does not have overnight facilities, there are two picnic areas and hiking trails for day use. Admission is free.
