Richmond’s geographic location placed it at a central place in American history—before it was technically America or Richmond—that encompasses exploration and extinction, liberty and enslavement, war and remembrance. So many themes of American history are evident here—the contradictions and the curses, the grievous errors and great achievements, that it’s preposterous to think a few pages can do justice to Richmond history.
