Description: The decor here makes a statement. It looks like an aquarium: deep blues and greens, very moody, very pretty. There’s also a touch of Africa in the zebra-striped banquettes. It’s all very young, fun, and vibrant. The food is vibrant, too, bursting with chilis, lemongrass, lime, and cilantro. A standout is the shrimp—big, juicy, and cooked just right. If you like whole fish, this is the place to have it. It is smothered in all those tongue-teasing spices, and even after you’re full, you can’t stop picking at it, the flavor’s so memorable. All the seafood is good here, befitting the aquarium theme. After dinner, Tara Thai pays tribute to America’s endless sweet tooth by offering a variety of unusual desserts. Most feature tropical fruits and flavorings, and all are delectable, though some may not suit western palates. Owner Nick Srisawat has also expanded his concept into suburban Maryland: One is at 9811 Washington Boulevard in Gaithersburg (301-947-8330), and another is in downtown Bethesda at 4828 Bethesda Avenue (301-657-0488). Tara Thai is open for lunch and dinner every day.
