Description: A 12-mile drive west of Williamsburg, off the Route 5 Scenic Byway, is Piney Grove at Southall’s Plantation. Three generations of the Gordineer family welcome travelers to their home, which is a Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Built circa 1790 on 300 acres first occupied by the Chickahominy Indians, Piney Grove is the oldest existing example of log architecture in Tidewater Virginia. Another home on the property, the Ladysmith, is a modest Greek Revival plantation house built in 1857. Both houses have been meticulously restored to their original appearances and include every modern convenience for guests. Six spacious guest rooms—each with a private bath, working fireplace, small refrigerator, and coffeemaker—are tastefully appointed with family heirlooms as well as antiques and artifacts that chronicle four centuries of Virginia home life. Suites are available for parties of up to 4 guests.The parlor library boasts a collection of books on Virginia history. A nature trail, garden walk, and pool invite outdoor activity. Mint juleps, hot toddies, cider, and nightcaps of brandy are offered in every season. A candlelight plantation breakfast is served in the 1790 Log Room.No pets or smoking is permitted. Children are welcome, and young guests will particularly enjoy the barnyard animals. Credit cards are not accepted. The inn takes checks, cash, or traveler’s checks.
