Coyote Point Recreation Area

The Coyote Point Recreation Area, located at 1651 Coyote Point Drive, San Mateo, CA is 20 miles south of San Francisco and 30 miles north of San Jose. Coyote Point originally was an island surrounded by a salt marsh. In the 1800's, the marsh was filled in and many trees planted; however, due to the strong wind and poor soil quality, many of those trees never reached a significant height.

The recreation area offers many outdoor recreational activities including: picnicking, windsurfing, swimming, fishing, sailing, bicycling and jogging. It also features a beach promenade, several trails, a marina, a yacht club and a saltwater marsh.

Coyote Point is a popular windsurfing location in Northern California due to the fairly constant wind in the area. The park offers rentals of windsurfing and kite boarding gear, as well as lessons at the Boardsports School.

The Coyote Point Museum resides within the recreation area and showcases the six major ecosystems found in the bay area, as well as providing a home for injured or imprinted wild animals.

All of the plant and animals in the recreation area are protected and portions of the park may be off limits to visitors. Coyote Point opens year round at 8 a.m.; however, closure times vary from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. depending on the time of year.
