Rattlesnake Canyon Trail

The Rattlesnake Canyon trail is a great destination spot for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy the adventure of off-roading. The trail starts at an elevation of 3,100 feet and rises gradually to its peak level of over 5,700 feet. The trail is located in San Bernardino County and travels from Highway 247 approximately 18 miles east. The entire canyon is surrounded by cattle grazing land. Travelers are required to drive safely and should always be on the lookout for cattle and sometimes horses crossing the trail. In order to not cause distress in the livestock adventurers are asked to wait patiently for the cattle to cross or move off the road before venturing further. Cattle have grazed in this area for over 100 years. Visitors on the trail system will pass through the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness area. Since this is a designated wildlife area it's important that off-road vehicles remain on the trail at all times. All side canyons are off limits to motorized vehicles of any kind. The canyon has a vast history and contains some mines dating back to the Spaniards and from early in the 20th century. The scenery is breathtaking and vehicles often stop along the trail to take photos or just to enjoy the beauty of the area. Most of the trail is somewhat sandy but travelers will encounter some rocky areas that must be traversed. It goes without saying that four-wheel drive vehicles are a must.
