Saint Sava's Serbian Orthodox Church

Saint Sava's Serbian Orthodox Church is located at North Main Street in Jackson, California and is approximately 60 miles from Sacramento International Airport. It is the oldest Serbian Orthodox Church in North America and Canada after being built in 1894. Back in the early 1890s, Jackson was home to a large Serbian population and the church is here to meet the spiritual needs of their ancestors amongst other things.

An inscription can be found to the right of the gate of the entrance to the church and cemetery. This outlines the date the church was erected and that Rev. Sebastian Dabovich was the first priest in the parish. The building is an impressive white structure and visitors can also see the graves of victims of the Argonaut Mine disaster of 1922.

Visitors to the church will find a few places to dine nearby including Bonanza Steak House, which is also on North Main Street. Mel and Faye's Diner on Highway 49/88 and Teresa's Place on Jackson Gate Road are only about a kilometer away from the church. A visit to the church can be followed up with a trip to Sutter Gold Mine on Highway 49, where there are one hour guided tours provided of the mine.
