Tahoe National Forest


Located east of Sacramento California is the Tahoe National Forest. The forest was named for Lake Tahoe, even though that lake lies outside the boundaries of this part, but there are 800,000-acres of land included in the forest. It is mixed with 400,000-acres of privately owned land, creating a more than one million acre area of wooded public and private land that is serene, exciting, and peaceful. There area variety of recreational activities available in the forest including snow capped peaks and colossal forests. The forest was established in 1891 as part of the Sierra Forest Reserve project. The area continued to expand over the years as presidents continued to add acreage to the publicly-owned land. There are Ranger Stations and a Visitors Center on the property and you can get maps of the park from both locations.There are cabins for rent in the forest for those who want to stay overnight, but have shelter. The Calpine and Sierraville Rang District provides accommodations for campers. There are traditional campsites available as well, some of which can be reserved and some that are fist come first serve. Camping Season is typically May through October, and holiday weekends during this time are the busiest. Those who truly want to rough it can try camping in areas that are not developed campgrounds in the forest.
