Did the lady get it right ?

Posted 05-22-2015 at 10:33 AM by Fortoggie

THE LORD KNOWS WHAT WE NEED; WE DON'T: Stopped in to get some milk and juice, the clerk was a nice lady of about 70 and to make conversation I said; it's a little cooler out tonight. " Yes but we shouldn't complain' she said. I nodded and said we have to take what we get. Then she said " the Lord gives us what we need because we don't know what we need." That statement raised so many questions in my mind that I didn't respond and here a day later I am still wondering where she got that little bit of homespun philosophy.
She seems to assume that the Lord controls the temperature like the thermostat controls the temperature in my house. It just happened that earlier in the day I was reading about men getting caught in a hostile desert and only by a stroke of luck they survived. Recently I read of those who froze to death after being trapped on the south pole. But even in mild climates like we have here the weather can turn mean and even deadly and yet so many insist on keeping a mental image that doesn't fit with reality.
Basically what we see here is a failure in logic and reason; an imputation of more to God than reason would suggest and a put down on human wisdom that in effect degrades all the fine minds that God has built into our skulls. When the lady says we humans don’t know what we need even to the point of the weather she, however unintentionally, degrades us as a species.
If we question her; would she say that if we are in a drought that we don’t know that we need rain or that we may have to do other things to ameliorate the problem. Other things such as bringing in water by building an aqueduct or providing irrigation.
When she said that we don’t know what we need, it was probably just a “ filler” just a loose statement without thought yet when we are surrounded by these nonsensical statements day in and day out out it tends to mess up our minds. Because around me I noticed that several people had put on thin jackets or sweaters because the temp had dropped about 15 degrees, they knew that they needed a little something extra.
Here in the south there is still a lot of distrust of the human intellect. Listen and you will hear, “ lean not unto your own understanding” and yet it is Solomon who wrote that who keeps telling us to seek out knowledge and wisdom.
Well at least I got a half gallon of orange juice at $ 2 off and another lesson in lopsided logic. You can’t do that every time you go to the store.
