Are WE Equal?

Posted 08-05-2015 at 06:51 PM by Fortoggie

Soon students all across the country will be returning to the classroom. Many will be studying the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDANCE. Most will spend a week or so on these lines; We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal. There is only so much that you can teach a fifth grader or a tenth grader or for that matter a sophomore in college but there's a lot more in that short sentence than meets the eye. When your child is ready there's a lot of table conversation in that statement. For instance it should be evident that we are not created equal; not in size or strength or abilities. Certainly we are not the same color and because of our family heritage we will not have the same opportunities in life. Yet the framers of this document left unsaid but expected us to assume that, indians, blacks and women were not equal. There's more but work these topics into your table conversation this school year and see what your youngsters do with it.
