Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Thoughts Of Radio's Past: Keeping It C-Side

Posted 12-09-2016 at 08:44 PM by case44

Back a few moons ago, I remember heading down to Corpus Christi with a friend of mine, and we took time to listen to the radio while on the beach. Being that I am a mild radio buff, I remember the jingles and different airchecks from whichever stations we had going on.

Two stations that stick out are the ones known as Z95 and C101. In those days, KZFM-FM (95.5) and KNCN-FM (101.3) were two very fine rock and pop stations that were red-hot in the market. I still remember one -ism that sticks out for C101. Disc jockeys referred to keeping by that channel when they told listeners to "Keep it C-side....". This often happened when a song would come up or whenever there was a promotion. A plug I still remember from Z95 consisted of this, as the announcer would ask: "What's the number one radio station in (town or city name)?" The reply from a recorded listener: "Z95!"

Ahhhhhh, memories.

It should be noted that the C in C101 refers to the sea, or the ocean. C-side refers to seaside, so you see the creativity in radio.

Both of those stations are still going and still on the air, with pretty much the same formats that they've had all these years. Although I have not taken the time to listen to either one on my computer, it's doubtful that they are doing the same stuff they did back then (some thirty years ago). One of these days, I ought to take a listen, especially before I head there in February for some R&R. Who sez you can't keep it C-side when you're not listening to the number one station in the Coastal Bend?

Radio yet still has its place.

My plans are for me to go to Corpus next month for a little vacation. I'll check out those two stations when I go on down. I've sampled them online. Boy, today's music is a whole lot different than what I experienced three decades ago.
