Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Astros' Additions Can Only Help For '17

Posted 12-11-2016 at 07:30 PM by case44

Missing the playoffs is never a satisfying result for any baseball team. The Houston Astros are supposed to win and are supposed to be on the upward swing. If Major League Baseball's annual Winter Meetings are any indication, it would appear that Houston has come away with vast improvements.

You can expect the 2017 batting order to have better batting averages than the one Houston had the year before. The Astros have upgraded. They now have Brian McCann as their new starting catcher. They've got Josh Reddick and Carlos Beltran in the outfield. They've even claimed lefty reliever Ashur Tolliver (a promising youngster) from the Angels off waivers. All they really need to do now, if they like, is to try to add a top-flight starting pitcher to go with the starters they have, whom general manager Jeff Luhnow believes will return to previous form after brief injuries sidelined Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers. Offensively, the Astros now have one of the deepest lineups, if not the deepest, in the league.

Hopefully, the powers that be are banking on Keuchel and Collin McHugh returning to 20-win form, and possibly, big things from Joe Musgrove, who showed so much promise last year. If they can have at least four starting pitchers winning at least 14 games, then you can see the best team in the American League West this next season. Houston fans have plenty of reason to be excited, what with McCann's ability to work with pitchers and Beltran's knack for difference-making in games, not to mention a good influence on the younger players. And those two..........have immense playoff experience. That's going to be a plus for Houston and something to keep your eyes on.

Baseball is going to be really fun next year at the intersection of Crawford and Texas. Watch out for this.
