Roosevelt and Carter Anti-Semitism

Carter wrote an anti-Semitic screed called Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. One of my work colleagues who knew my family back in the late 1960's more or less forced me to read it. The book starts out with a Middle East "timeline." The point of the timeline was that the Hebrews only possessed an independent kingdom for a minor period in Biblical times, and otherwise were under Babylonian, Assyrian, Egyptian or Greek control. Then he made some very unkind remarks about pre-1973 war Israelis. The gist of the book was that Jews are more trouble than they are worth. The linked article (post edited to discuss this) Is Jimmy Carter an Anti-Semite? is inaccurate. As U.S. President Carter had to have known that there never was a "peace process" with the Palestinian militants. Egypt, and later Jordan were the only entities prepared to recognize Israel. Let's be clear- the argument is not about settlements; it's about Israel's legitimacy. Carter's book essentially delegitimizes Israel. Unfortunately and sadly (since I was a supporter of Carter's and even attended as a guest on a press pass the 1976 Democratic Convention in New York City) this article, posted by Rachel976 gets it right, The Moral Disintegration of Jimmy Carter.

Eisenhower's conduct towards Israel during the British-French-Israeli effort to retake the stolen Suez Canal was borderline despicable. John Foster Dulles, his Secretary of State had a long-running hate affair with Jews during his business days.

FDR was worse than a "mixed bag." Even before the rejection of the ship the St. Louis his state department found that virtually all Jewish immigrants were "likely to become a public charge." There was the refusal to bomb the rail links to the death camps. Last but certainly not least was his promise to ibn Saud not to allow a Middle Eastern Jewish state. Fortunately Truman thought better after FDR descended either into a grave or further down into the fires underground. Last edited by jbgusa; Today at 08:28 PM..

And, yes, I agree with Rachel -- please feel free to enlighten me, too.

Whether Jimmy Carter harbors anti-Semitic feelings is of course subject to opinion. The opinion of that professor in the article you linked (who spoke at the VERY liberal DC café Busboys, a venue that has hosted some very controversial left-wing speakers*) is a resounding "no," but at the same time, others have a different opinion.

As always, it boils down to the liberals' tendency to "support the underdog no matter how immoral" they may be (quote from my linked article below), so that may explain why President Carter said that HAMAS is a legitimate political partner, along with some other questionable comments. This could be a separate thread, but for now, you might find the opposing view worthy of food for thought:

*I only mention that Busboys is ultra leftists and hosts leftist speakers, because OF COURSE a speaker there would defend Carter against claims of being influenced by negative opinions toward Jews.

Wow....thank you for this. I had no idea. (How does a guy with an IQ of 79 know so much?)

A good thread for discussion purposes might be "Why do Jews continue to hold FDR up as a hero when his antisemitism indirectly led to millions of Jewish deaths?," but I know the answer: They are more directed by their liberalism than their Judaism, and this is seen by the fact that most secular and Reform Jews are liberal, and most observant and Orthodox Jews are conservative.

A Rabbi diagnosed my IQ in front of 300 people as we were leaving Yom Kippur services in 2006. He didn't say "79" but basically called me a moron.

Morse which I read in February-March 1973. My family had been FDR worshipers until then. My mother was born November 7, 1932, the day before Election Day that year. My mother's name was lengthened from "Ruth" to "Ruthellen" in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt. At that point FDR's election was virtually inevitable. My father and his family were wildly admiring of him.

My father died January 5, 1973. When I was at synagogue during the month to come for his name reading I grabbed the Temple library's copy of the book. When I got around to reading it I was so engrossed that I tacked a bedsheet on on my bedroom window so my mother wouldn't see my up reading at 1:00 a.m. She had been out dating my soon-to-be stepfather. I sadly concluded that FDR was no friend. With my father gone and my mother apathetic, I was, at almost 16 far freer to form my own views. I loved my father but he would cringe at my current views on many things. My stepfather and I agreed on far more.

About two years ago I read 1944: FDR and the Year That Changed History by Jay Winik. That book and other reading cemented my view that despite some tepid "efforts" such as the War Refugee Board, Roosevelt almost preferred to have the "Jewish problem" finally resolved overseas by ensuring that most Jewish captives did not survive.

Why do Jews continue to hold FDR up as a hero given his antisemitism?

FDR has been a long-time hero to the Jewish people.

Since roughly 1968, when While Six Million Died: A Chronicle of American Apathy by Arthur D. Morse came out, it was painfully obvious that he was anything but. Indeed, he said what people, including the American people, the Jews and Hitler wanted to hear. In in February-March 1973 I read the referenced book. Even before his now-famous rejection of the ship the St. Louis his state department found that virtually all Jewish immigrants were "likely to become a public charge."

The Jews is many respect are their own worst enemy. They give aid and comfort to those who give them lip service. And by the way hate Donald Trump. Totally counter-intuitive.
