Allergic to the Cold...Did you ever hear of this!!

Posted 10-11-2009 at 12:02 PM by Summering

The four year old is allergic to the cold.
I have never....you have never....but its called...Urticaria. The little one was diagnosed yesterday.
He took a trip around the block, with his bike and lots of friends, in 45 degree weather. ( occurs under 50 degrees)
His hands and arms swelled up like balloons. He got hives, his face was bright red. The doctor was called.....its Urticaria!
Now, today he had to leave an apple farm and a great tractor ride, because he was swelling up again.
The dear tractor driver pretended his tractor was broken so as not to break the little guys heart. As they whispered in his ear that this again, was cropping up and so the ride was not going to be an option.
So we go over the implications here.....and nothing sounds very good.
Cold water, such as a lake or pond......could cause a deadly reaction.
Cold drinks.......Cold anything.
What about winter sports......football, soccer, hockey. Baseball is still played quite late in the season?
Snow.......Sleigh rides........Snowmen...
Skiing?
What do you do when all the children go outside to play, and your child is inside?
A more Southern state perhaps...
Although, the AC and even the rain can cause this allergy to arise.
A cool nights breeze.......can start the immune system to go haywire.
The little guy has had his share of other food allergies.......but that has been worked out the best ways possible. He brings his own birthday cupcakes, and he has to watch snack time. He has the peanut allergy and during the test on that, it had to be ended real, real, quick.
This allergy to the Cold, a complete surprise.
I know about the bubble boy.......I know this isn't as bad as that. But, I didn't even
have an idea that there would be an allergy to something as normal as a fall day!
I hope that next week they will come up with some medication ( and I heard of two besides Benadryl) that will allow him to be an active boy in the outside world.
Right now, the family is a bit overwhelmed by its ramifications.
I think there might be a move more south so as not to have the winter months to deal with.
He is such a little sweetheart. He asks, "Mommy whats the matter with me?"
As he is feeling sick from the reactions....
This is going to be a hard one to explain...
Worse yet, a hard one to work through.
But, I know God never gives us more then we can handle.......
And so we will..........

    I guess I will comment........
Friday the little guy goes to the allergist. He had a bad reaction just going from the house to the car. Another reaction of welts and swells from recess with the children at school. ( Mom was with him) The epi pen will always be nearby. I'm thinking a parking permit is needed just to get him in and out of places in the winter. She explained what was wrong to him today. He asked......." Mommy what's wrong with me" as he itched his legs that were welting.
I'm sad that I never heard of this, and when I do it is so personal........so close to my heart.
So happy that on Friday I will be there to give him a hug.....

My heart goes out your grandson.

It's true that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. Take care of him and keep us posted.

Well the little guy just gave some blood for testing.....Brave and good he was. Then he will go back for four more viles...
This is difficult. Its hard for people to understand......It is so rare.
This cold allergy is as rare as getting rabies or anthrax......an not understood very well.
If you were a neighbor (with a child) would you visit, just to make some happiness for the child and Mom?.........Its not happening because kids are outside playing, and at 50 or so...this child can't. It makes me sad...
This child can loose his life over weather.....and forever he should not jump into any lake or swimming area, thats out.
To much histimine all at once on an entire body, makes shock!
The swelling he had on his arms and legs from the bike ride might mean angioderma along with the Urticaria. Double trouble.
This is not an easy road......lets hope this is a short duration as it can last for months, years, or for life. ( common for years)
    Hoping God answers our prayers.........
