Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Top Ten........Barbecue Places

It's time once again for another case44 Top Ten list. And also, once again, we've got more food havens to share with the world because, dangit, we just love to eat. Those of you that don't, well, then you just don't like chocolate chip cookies.

Our little excursion into this fact-finding mission, however, will not be about chocolate chip cookies. We've got the main course to discuss. Face it: What would life be without beef brisket, pork ribs, smoked sausage, chicken, or ham? Let's open up our can of worms and gather around the computer campfire (or, in this case, a wood-fired pit) so I can reveal my Top Ten Barbecue Places. Call them what you will: pits, joints, hangouts, restaurants, what have you, but these places are havens for barbecue lovers. I'll preface by also saying that you can get great barbecue in many places in America, such as Kansas City, Memphis, and anywhere in the Carolinas. I'm sorry to say I haven't been to those locations.....yet, but I'll do my best to get to them one day. In the meantime, since my home state is Texas, where we pride ourselves on how we do barbecue (I still do brag that it's the best in the world), I thought I'd give you my top picks in the region in which I live, so please forgive me if this list hits too close to (my) home.

Let's get going with this thing, or we won't have any barbecue.

10. Cooper's BBQ, Llano, TX - Excellent smoked meats, which include goat.
9. Texas Rib Kings, Austin - You may know their ribs, but you won't want to miss their incredible sliced beef sandwich.
8. Dickey's Barbecue Pit - Various TX locations - Yes, it's a Dallas chain. Big deal. I dare you to pass up this group's brisket and the best sausage this side of Elgin, TX.
7. Salt Lick BBQ - Driftwood, TX - They have a mustard-based sauce that's very different, but very good. Excellent smoked meats.
6. Rib Crib - Multiple Oklahoma locations and Lubbock, TX - Those Okies make good 'cue, too.
5. Kreuz Market - Lockhart, TX - No sauce?? No problem. No forks?? The heck with those. It's all about the meat.
4. Black's BBQ - Lockhart, TX - Owned by the same family for more than 80 years. Great smoked meats and veggies.
3. Hard Eight BBQ - Coppell, TX - You order right off the pit. This rivals anything Central Texas has to offer.
2. Goode Company Barbeque - Houston - Outstanding smoked meats, jalapeno-cheese bread, and they even have jambalaya. Also, the best potato salad I've ever tasted.
1. Hammond's BBQ - Glen Rose, TX - The best pork ribs I've ever had. And you won't want to leave without a slice of peanut butter pie.

And I'd like to include some other places for Honorable Mention that are also fine places:

Bodacious BBQ - Various TX locations - Don't miss the peppery pork ribs.
Gabby's BBQ - Houston - Excellent brisket and sides.
Meyer's Elgin Smokehouse - Elgin, TX - The sausage legend in Central Texas.
The Barbecue Company - El Paso, TX - This is about the only place in El Paso that offers good barbecue. Pricey, but delicious.
Red, Hot, And Blue - Various TX locations - Delicious Memphis-style grub at this great Dallas chain.
Rudy's Country Store and BBQ - Various TX locations - Meats served on butcher paper, and spicy "Sause".

And others I'd like to try:

Jack Stack BBQ - Kansas City, MO - Considered the "fine dining" of all barbecue restaurants in the Fountain City.
Arthur Bryant's BBQ - Kansas City, MO - The KC legend has served celebrities and presidents. Plus, I love their website!
Luling City Market - Luling, TX - It's further south from Lockhart, but they also have a Houston location. So many great stories, though.
J & M Barbecue - Lubbock, TX - The website is just tempting me to go.

The greatness and aura of enjoying succulent, smoky, satisfying barbecue can be found in many places throughout the South, Southwest, and Midwest. There are many hole-in-the-wall places, mom-and-pops, and even a few chains from small towns to big cities that offer fantastic smoked meats and veggies for the barbecue enthusiast. Not to mention, also, for anyone that loves good food, period. If you are from outside Texas, I encourage you to come on over and experience some great food at these places, or you can certainly find places that I haven't mentioned and try them for yourself. Gosh, it's great to be a Texan!

And there you are.

You've got some great ideas posted here. And, yes, you need to get to Kansas City, and they cook up some magnificent grub there. I'll try one of your places if you give me a few of your chocolate chip cookies.

Case, Salt Lick opened up a new location in Grand Prairie. I believe it's over by the Joe Poole Lake area. Haven't been there yet but one day I'll try it out.

Is that right, blue?? I didn't think they would ever begin construction on that place. If it, indeed, is open, I'll try to get over there and check it out as soon as I can get down there.
