This morning I am baking a "Pumpkin/Black Walnut Tea Bread". I seasoned it with cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger. Soon my kitchen will be fragrant with fall.

I havent had black walnuts in years. When I was a kid, I used to go out with my father and gather wild black walnuts....trying to beat the squirrels to the favorite trees. This was in North Hatley Quebec and also in Ohio.

Black Walnuts are tedious and difficult to open and to pick the meat out of them. Our reward was Mom would make something special .....date or pumkin breads, or a cake with blackwalnuts scattered over the maple frosting, or similarly frosted cookies.

Dad always told us the story of how valuable the wood from the Black Walnut tree is. It is funny and comforting how memories can "come back like a ghost".

Mary Oliver has a wonderful poem about a Black Walnut tree on a homestead

Black Walnut is a beautiful wood. I love that dark chocolate brown colour. Curl and burl grain patterns are visually appealing to my eyes. Some day I hope to restore an old upright piano with black walnut burl veneer to showcase in my home. Cheer!
