I went there for 50 years, from the time my mother could spoon feed me the custard.

I left Ohio 2 years ago for NC, which I hate. I am currently moving to SC.
IMAGINE....my huge surprise in my new little town of Fort Mill SC, to find out that someone from the Strickland's family has moved to Fort Mill as well, AND set up a custard stand.

Ah....a little bit of home, right around the corner from my condo :-)

I love SC already.

That's pretty amazing! I was shocked to find one in Montrose, OH near where friends of mine live. Good thing I don't visit often or I'd be as big as a house. : ) It's the best ever.

For those who have had both, how does Strickland's Frozen Custard compare to East Coast Frozen Custard, which is a chain in the Cleveland area (the original one is on Pearl Rd. in Parma Heights)? I grew up in Cleveland, but until I read this thread, I had never heard of Strickland's. I've had East Coast's numerous times, and I rate it as the best I've ever had - by far! If Strickland's is as good or better, I'll have to try it the next time I'm up that way.

I do know this from reading an article about Stricklands in the York County SC magazine.

Seems the machines that made the custard were kind of special. The machines were however, no longer made. According to the article, Stricklands then had new ones rebuilt using the old machines as the blueprints so to say. The new machines are exact replica's of the old machines. Not only that Stricklands has copyright and ownership of the new machines. Herein lies the secret supposedly. It's just not the formula, it's the machine as well.

I did find out that the young man that opened up the shop in Fort Mill SC, is not related to the family. I guess he just must of approached Stricklands on setting up a franchise. Regardless I thank him !!

NOW CAN SOMEONE TALK TO SWENSON's and get them somewhere in the Charlotte metro area as well?

Charlotte metro area is actually considered to be around 60-70 miles.
Charlotte dead ends at the SC state border.

I'm surprised the new owners picked Fort Mill over CHarlotte itself, Fort Mill is small. Growing but small...so small, that directions I received the other day to go to the gas company for service set up, were, go down this (the road I was on) a bit, and turnleft at the "peachstand"...LOL no road name, just the "peachstand". What a great place to live, somewhere where it's warm most of the year and somewhere where you can pick your own peaches!

Mrs. P,

Thanks for the 411. East Coast Custard also uses special rebulit machines according to the history info on its website (East Coast Custard Original Frozen Custard (broken link)). My guess is that Strickland's is comparable to East Coast's, but I'll be sure to test that hypothesis the next time I'm up that way - a perfect excuse to have two frozen custard cones! To the best of my knowledge, Columbus (where I currently live) and Cincinnati (where I lived for seven years before relocating to Columbus for a job), do not have any places that make 'real' frozen custard.
