I prefer the Oregon District in Dayton to anything in Akron nowadays. As part of that university downtown revitalization project, they've torn down the block containing Brubaker's Pub and Jillians. A 6(?) storey apartment complex with shops and restaurants on the first floor is going there. Some bars on the north side of Exchange street in the area known as the Zip Strip are being demolished to make room for the new football stadium. Say goodbye to good ol' Manny's.

While many old institutions are no longer (or will soon be no longer), there are some new places like Crave and others around there on Market, Ohio Brewing/Damons, etc. Hopefully the growth trend will continue because downtown is quite dismal as it is now.

my question is how would you get home from Cleveland after partying? you would need a designated driver. when my friends party in Akron I am just a phone call and a few minutes away to chauffeur them home ,but this chauffeur isn't going to drive to Cleveland at 230am.

That's what I like about Akron. I can get trashed at Highland Square or downtown, and a cab back to my house is 5 bucks, as opposed to 3k for a DUI.

Didn't have to drink to elevate the mind back when Fresh Air was a progressive format on WKSU. Just tune in and travel, 'course that was back in the day...

I'm trying now to put all my Fresh Air cassettes, though jungle recordings in mono, into mp3 format. I came across some of the folks who were part of Fresh Air, and was fronted 90 hours of broadcasts in mp3 format...wonder if they are getting together in a pub in Kent somewhere...

A lot of folks don't remember when this progressive music program was aired, as everyone one was bombarded with heavy rotation of commercial ugh...working night shift was a plus, college radio was great, still is.

The total is now up to 129 hours, so you are a little behind the count, as we just added 30 more hours to the Archive!

I'm guessing I might be too young (28) to know what you are speaking of in relation to Fresh Air?

Never to young...

Here is the link...
Air Modern

I have to paste the links to get it to play, or click all day and get nothing. Fresh Air Friend, Help! Would love to down load the rest...we need to move this to a new thread to make Fresh Air easier to find.

WKSU-89.7 had an overnight broadcast for nearly 10 years from abouts 1973-1982, that provided aural nutrition that would not be supported by the commercial radio ca-ca stew that was provided to northeast Ohio (WMMS, WGCL, now WNCX, M105 now Majic 105, et al).

Very professionally run...Some of these broadcast sets provide setlists, some do not. Fresh Air was the crux of what built my album collection...whole album sides broadcast!!! Unheard of in todays music broadcasts

I still have my Fresh Air T-shirt, purchased @ Sound Of Music in Brunswick.

This is not to be confused with the NPR talk show forum called Fresh Air, that is presently on WKSU, which in itself is a good program.

The posts should stream, it just takes Flash. I'm listening to one now. Every once and a while the site gets reworked and things don't function for a bit. Sorry to hijack the original thread. Like Newmex said, the program was a "free form" progressive mix that ran on WKSU until the end of 1981. What survives at the web site link is recordings made by listeners of the program. Those recordings were kindly shared for the creation of the Fresh Air Archive.
