Issue 2 would decide who regulates animal care in Ohio's biggest business | Columbus Dispatch Politics (http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/09/06/copy/LIVESTOCK_ISSUE.ART_ART_09-06-09_A1_UUEVV9K.html?sid=101 - broken link)

Actually THIS is a good link, http://www.lwvohio.org/ actually explains the issue instead of an article which I dont find to be impartial....

from what I see this would stop nat'l groups from mandating what and how Ohioans raise their livestock, I myself dont like to many gov't rules but at least this will stop nat'l interference and allow local decisions I am voting for issue 2 for that reason.

I'm voting no because I think it could hurt the small farmer by creating regulations that they couldn't meet.

All of the small farmers that I know are voting yes for the exact reasons that htlong stated.

I live in a farm community that has "vote yes" signs in every corn field. A good buddy of mine makes his only income from 50 head of dairy cows. I told him that I would vote which ever way he was voting. He fully supports issue 2

My understanding is that small farmers want to do an end run around the animal rights groups which want to control the way they take care of their animals. If they set up a group which they think is balanced and fair, they avoid having their livelihoods controlled by some group like PETA, for example.
My feeling is that family farms know how to achieve balance between good animal health and ability to make a profit, so if they are for it, so am I.

yeah Ole Peta....they want to control the rat population by practicing birth control? who is going to put condoms on all of those rats?
I called peta on a puppy mill and they could have cared less about shutting it down.
and it was in the city of Norfolk their head quarters......vote for issue 2 and keep wackos from enforcing their agendas on hard working farmers!

I found this quote yesterday, and thought it summed up the "no" argument pretty well:

Quote:
Issue 2 is a big-government power grab by large agri-business interests. It will do nothing to protect the small family farms, and because of the unfair weighting of the proposed state board, it will eventually work against the small farmers. It will enshrine into the Ohio constitution yet another state bureaucracy that will be able to promulgate state regulations that HAVE THE FORCE OF LAW. I'm not buying into the "HSUS is gonna get us" scare tactics being used by pro Issue 2 groups, and I'm shocked that some large sportsmen groups have bought into this slick piece of political manipulation and allowed themselves to be used in this way. Farming should be regulated by the Ohio Department of Agriculture through the peoples' legislature, not by a permanent unelected group of political appointees as this proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution would do. It makes one wonder who is buttering who's bread. We sportsmen are strong enough to defeat any proposals that PETA or the HSUS put forward down the road. Vote NO.
