Each town should post a list of homes that haven't had their taxes paid. If AL is like FL, you pay those taxes and place a lien on the property. If given a certain amount of time that isn't repaid you get the home.

Keep in mind, most of them these days will have large balances due in mortgage and will be in very poor condition. Seldom do you find a home without taxes paid that's in good condition and debt-free.

In Many states, tax auctions are held by county and/or large city. Generally these auctions are held once a year. You have to do some research on the home before you "buy" it - and there is usually a time during which the previous owners can buy it back for the taxes, interest, and any repairs. This is regulated by statute. You also have to see how the statutes handle other liens, such as mechanics' liens, mortgage, etc.

You didn't think it was as easy as paying a few hundred or a couple thousand dollars and owning a house outright, did you?

It's seems very unrealistic to think that someone is going to just "give away" a 4 bedroom home! If someone is really desperate, then they can make do with renting a smaller place.

Tax auctions are published at the court house and generally in the news paper somewhere in the for sale section.
