Looking to retire to Alabama from DC, where you have milder winters, normal humidity, lower tax's, reasonable housing costs, excellent medical facilities, good shopping, not a lot of traffic to deal with and is close to hunting and fishing area's. Is Auburn the place?

I would suggest Baldwin county,as it will have all you wish for, specially the fishing. Check lower Alabama...several areas to chose from.

Not sure what you mean about normal humidity. I know DC can be dreadful in summer, but most of the Southeast is the same way so Auburn would not give any relief there, but otherwise Auburn could fit your bill. I think the medical care is pretty good. East Alabama Medical Center seems pretty progressive; Columbus, GA and Montgomery are not too far away if need be. You would definitely be near hunting and fishing areas, or at least not too far away. Auburn-Opelika area is one of the fastest growing micropolitan areas, and probably the fastest growing area of Alabama, save maybe Huntsville. I am biased a bit as I attended Auburn. Nice rolling hills, nice areas to live, generally low crime. Shopping is probably nothing to write home about but adequate for the size of the area. The climate is generally mild ( except Summer) most of the year, with an occasional snow/ice storm, probably averaging once every 2 or 3 years.
Anyway, hope this helps. As other poster said, Baldwin County/ Mobile area is nice, but I think the scenery overall is nicer around Auburn, but you would be about 3.5 hrs to the beach from Auburn, but only about 90 min or less from Atlanta airport.
