We've lived here 2 years and have still not fully adjusted. I'd love some opinions as to what makes AL such a great place to live/raise a family?

what part of Alabama? You've got Huntsville and then you've got everywhere else.

That sums it up. "...everywhere else". Funny stuff.

My sister used to live in Northport.
If you like...
Humidity
Bugs
Rebel Flags and
The Crimson Tide....then it is very appealing.

You indicated bugs. By bugs you mean, knats, mosquitos, etc.

or large ugly water bugs that show up everywhere? The kind that fly? i use to live in the Caribbean.

we plan to move to the area and I need to know what my kids would expect.

Probably nothing like what you saw in the Caribbean. Mostly just general small insects.

Although, the fire ants can be pretty intimidating. When the same sister lived in Southern Mississippi, the fire ant mounds were huge and most of the kids there were eaten up with bites. That, was way out in the sticks.

Giant cockroaches, it amazes me that Tuscaloosa does not have the means to control the roaches, everywhere you walk after sunset you can find the nasty critters crawling all over the friggin place, inside... outside, they don't care they go anywhere. I just graduated from UA in Tuscaloosa this year and that is my favorite reason for not being there now. When I go back to tailgate I'm bringing 2 dozen roach bombs and 4 cans of roach killer.

Default AL is coming up short

on reasons people choose to live here, with the exception of Huntsville. I agree with all the negatives that have been posted so far but I'd really love to hear what people love about living in AL?
