Does anyone know where we could canoe on the Elk River in N. Alabama and camp over night. Also, are there campgrounds for camper trailers on the river?

I go to Elk River Canoes just east of Fayetteville, TN. From Decatur - north on I65 then east on US64 - less than an hour trip to their facility. They have a primitive campground and canoe rental. The river is perfect for kids: slow, mostly shallow, some gravel bars, lots of birds and wildlife.

I don't know of any canoe / campgrounds on the Elk in Alabama.

Wow, that looks like the perfect place for a weekend camping trip even with younger kids. It's stuff like this that is really making me look forward to living in the area. Not to say California doesn't have its scenic places, but they are either extremely crowded or much further out - if you want to really get away from the crowds you'll be doing desert camping (or backpacking a full day into the woods - not practical with young kids.). Not to say desert camping doesn't have its charms - I've had some awesome hikes and trips in the deserts of California, Arizona, and New Mexico. But I've camped and hiked the the southwest for years and it'll be nice to have a change of scenery.

zenjenn - lots of hiking / camping / boating around here, much of it very kid-friendly.

Walls of Jericho - about one hour east of HSV - unspoiled wilderness hiking / primitive camping - you've got to see this place!
