So the telephone rings at midnight yesterday when I'm asleep. Of course the first thing I thought of when I heard the phone ring was that something went wrong in the -48 with my mom so I ran downstairs to answer it.

On the other end of the phone was nothing less than an idjit of the first order asking about shipping halibut to Washington. Idjit didn't even know what time it was and gave me lip when I told him to call back during business hours. Wanted to know why I answered the phone if the business wasn't open.

This was clearly a halibut cop earning his federal paycheck on all of our respective dimes.

Must be nice to earn federal wages and benefits by harassing people by telephone in the middle of the night.

You should hook up with a halibut...cop! Then you might get left alone!

Last halibut cop I saw in the flesh had entirely too much flesh to be of interest to me and I'm sure it would cost me a fortune to feed him.

A few weeks ago the food bank called me and said the halibut cops were headed out here with 18 King Salmon they'd confiscated off a commercial boat. I said fine, we were in a bit of a lull at the moment so we'd process the salmon for free for the food bank...

though I did wonder why halibut cops were confiscating Kings from a commercial vessel; its legal for them to keep them this year.

Halibut cops showed up here with something like 6 or 8 Kings, can't remember which.

I am quite certain that the remainder of the Kings ended up in the halibut cops home freezers.

I've had some experience with halibut cops myself. I'd rather not think about it.

I know the feeling. It is mind boggling dealing with the outright stupidity of the average halibut cop. Sometimes all I can do is shake my head and sigh. I can't believe that the feds are forking out loot so that halibut cops can be employed by making midnight harassing telephone calls to legit businesses rather than going after the black marketeers.

Like I'm going to lose everything by trying to slip some halibut out...ffs. Halibut is federally managed. The feds could take everything if I dealt in black market halibut.

Halibut is fished out; we can and will get by without it, the stocks will replenish themselves by and by.

Yes, they are, and they have better manners.

Halibut is federally managed, which is why it's fished out. Alaska Fish and Game does an excellent job managing the salmon fisheries, for the most part.

No problem. It is a large ugly creature with both eyes on one side of its head. It's a bottom-feeder, not particularly known for it's intelligence. It spends its days poking around into areas where others are trying to mind their own business.
