Hey a buddy of mine tells tales of hooligan fishing S of Anchorage and it sounds like a lot of fun. I'm of a mind to try it. Thinking of coming out next May to try it and maybe get into some salmon fishing, depending on how much money I make.

Can you fish hooligan commercialy? Is there a market for it? I hear it goes great with a mustard sauce, like mackerel.

Any info you might have on this great sport would be appreciated.

Sorry... You've got to be an Alaskan resident.

the way I am reading this.....you still have to be a legal resident of Alaska...that takes living in AK for a year with verification.

copied an pasted for you:
Non-residents MAY NOT participate in personal use fisheries. Participation includes, but is not limited to, handling the gear, handling the fish, or driving the boat. Only Alaskan residents may participate in personal use fisheries, and by regulation, only those holding a valid Alaska resident sport fishing license, or ADF&G Permanent Identification Card (senior license), or ADF&G Disabled Veteran's license may participate in these fisheries.
For fishing and hunting purposes, the Alaska State Legislature has defined a resident as "a person who is physically present in Alaska with the intent to remain indefinitely and makes a home here, has maintained that person's domicile in Alaska for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding an application for a license and not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another state, territory, or country."
Alaska resident youth under 16 do not have to purchase a sport fishing license to participate. However, they must meet the residency requirement.

Thanks for the legalese honey that's why I'm going for the seniors license. I'm 69 years of age. Don't think if I'm out kayaking anyone's going to care anyways.

wow....you still have to be a resident of Alaska to obtain a seniors license for Hooligan an personal use fishing. I wanted to dipnet this summer but because I am not a resident I couldn't get a permit even though husband and I own land and pay taxes to the state of AK....we do not qualify for resident status yet. check the fines out for fishing illegally....an yes the fish and games is out if full force all the time....had them board the boat 32 miles out to sea and had them check on me out in the middle of the wood photographing salmon runs.

Hooligans are just dumb ol' smelt not salmon. I doubt ADF&G is going to bother with an ol cus like me catchin minnows. I'll try and see what happens license wise but time to move off that topic because it raises my boil.

Anybody out there tasted a hooligan? What's it really taste like? Can it be smoked?
