It's a joke, reflecting their feeling that AK (and Valdez specifically) is so different from the Lower 48 that it feels, to them, like a different country. They're smart, lovely people who chose to move here from SLC for skiing and new experiences. Plenty of other people around here seem to think the same way about going "down south," and I have to admit myself that I had a little bit of culture shock when I was in Dallas after a year and a half up here. It's just different here.

lower 48 or "Outside" Did like "hell", which is currently where I am. Got down here 2 weeks ago and already the temps have been swinging frpm 90 to 55, with overnights in the lower 30s to upper 28s. I sooooooo prefer Alaska temps. Its damp here too!!

NEW Grandbaby was born Tues after 6pm. Jordyn weighed 5-15. Other than jaundice, they ARE in Wa, baby is great and home with mom, dad -- thanks to the US Army for sending home 2 days before birth -- , 3 brothers and the youngest sister. Forgot the greatgrandparents came from Ark and one uncle and his gf from SCal. Too many people so I retreated to NCal for a break.

Don't worry. Most Minnesotan's don't act this way. We are typically a pretty reserved lot. We also think highly of Alaska. I swear there is not a single time that I mention to someone in the Midwest that I went to Alaska a few years ago and its always followed by "oh! I always wanted to go to Alaska! I mean, in the summer anyway." usually followed by a comment about how beautiful and pristine it is.

Besides, Govie lives in east St. Paul and we all know the west side near the Minneapolis border is where its at.

West Side is a dump (unless you want some tacos). East Side always has been and always will be the hockey capital of America, whether anyone in the country likes it or not, and that is a heckuva history to be part, you know. So yeah, sorry if I'm a little partial (er, arrogant), but it is what it is.

it's amazing what some people will debate on forums. I mean it's understandable here on the alaska forum, but this topic has drawn heated discussion on other boards. I use both terms, and have never really given it much thought.
