So about 18 months ago I decided to move to Alaska. Almost on a whim I packed up, sold my excess junk and drove to Alaska from Virginia. Went to Juneau, Tok, Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Anchorage, and then finally settled on Kenai.

I've been here 13 months so let me say a few things.

People here are crazy friendly.
Salmon...
I got a job similar to my previous job, but easier, for more money.
I live in the lower 48 equivalent of a national park.
I can see Cook Inlet from my bedroom.
Salmon...
I've been fishing and I've fallen in love.
I've been dipnetting and I have more salmon than I've seen in my life.
Did I already say Salmon?
Quality of life has improved by a factor of 456,432,067!
I hike every weekend off and have yet to repeat a trail.
Moose and Caribou in my freezer.
Salmon
Helly Hanson's
Uglisticks
More salmon
And finally...

Will someone get rid of the darned tourists?!?!

I love Alaska. This place is like the frackin garden of eden.

And now I know why no one tells anyone. I tell everyone it sucks here! 😁

Glad it's all worked out well for you. I think one's success depends a lot on their attitude.

Yeah, I have met a lot of people that don't like it here. Especially a lot of Alaskans which is weird.

I guess the grass is always greener on Tue other side lolol.

You've been here 18 months.

The average length of Outsider residence is 3 years or so. You'll probably figure out why that is in the next 18 months or so.

Boom, this is the difference between lovin it and jumping off a giant fuel tank to your death with cops chasing you because you are flat broke with no way out - Despondent California man leaps to his death in Anchorage | Alaska Dispatch

If you lost or did not have that monied up job things would get NOT lovin it real quick lol. Also the dating scene is rather poor up here for guys, some guys make it work but its not ideal. If your already married with a monied up job then this is Gods country if not God help you.

Mizzile - Well 5 years is the longest I've lived in one area and generally 2 is the longest in one town.

Not sure I'll leave Alaska though. I like the long winter (grew up in a desert), I love the outdoors, I love rain (that desert thing again) and I love small towns.

I haven't seen anything yet that could tempt me back to the big city.

Plus, I've lived in many states and several countries searching for a place that has everything I like.

As for the job, I work in healthcare. Never had a problem getting a job before. Didn't here, I came with no job but lots of money.

You are right about the dating scene.

If I were single again I might move somewhere that had dilapadated infrastructure and dicy politics so long as the dating scene was FIRMLY in mens favor. The issue is usually jobs in those areas though.

Well if you wanna get into the dating scene, then your best bet is going to Anchorage. It's getting hip.
