On an unrelated note I did give money to a beggar the other day outside of Walmart in Fairbanks. I usually don't give money, but his sign said "broke UAF student, looking for rich women" it made me laugh out loud I felt compelled to give a dollar . To all homeless people, make funny creative signs and you'll get more money from people like me.
And you didn't get his number for me? Damn you.

The best sign I ever saw being held at a street corner in Anchorage ...
"Will talk nasty to your mother-in-law for a dollar"

Anchorage is just like any other big city which isn't NYC or LA. After all the stories I was shocked at how ordinary it felt. The prices weren't even that outrageous.

Then there's Fairbanks, which doesn't even feel like a city but more like a small town.

I can see why a certain demographic thinks Alaska is the promised land.

I guess it just comes down to perspective snd time. If I spent more time in both I might feel differently anout the cities themselves. I haven't made up my mind about the people except to say I've noticed certain things which won't faze the promised landers but may slighly disturb everyone else.

Back in the '70s when there weren't so many people around, Anchorage was a nice place to live at. Now the name "Los Anchorage" fits the city quite well. The last time I visited Anchorage was over 25 or more years ago when My daughter was stationed in Elmendorf, and even then I was shocked at the change. Fairbanks is not too bad, but will get worst as more people from the lower-48 move in.

Anchorage was a great place in the early 70s. I joined the Marine Corps right out of high school and when I got out in 1979 Anchorage was a totally different place. Due to work, I lived there until 2004. Now, I avoid it like the plague. And if I do have go there, I'm always armed. That's how unsafe I feel there.
